My Abruzzo Home in the Heart of Italy

Or how to keep your sanity own a house in Italy ! All you need to know about buyng and owning a property in the undiscovered Italian region of Abruzzo, where lovers of nature and art will find much to interest and enchant them.

We bought our house in 2006 and spend a number of weeks every year slowly rennovating it using natural, ecological materials such as clay and lime and re-using the lovely old hand-made bricks and cut stones we have found on site.

I hope that this site will inspire others to follow our path and that in doing so they will find satisfaction and a sense of acheivment as we have done in restoring our old building to 'health'! And in the process instead of using concrete and plastic paints use traditional and tested materials relyinging on centuries old building techniques.

This site is laid out in sections that I hope will help visitors to understand the process of buying and restoring a property in the beautiful Italian region of Abruzzo The section on our house in Abruzzo links to the various stages of 'progress' from 2005 onwards
The section on Bioedilizia or eco building lists sources of natural building materials in Italy and Abruzzo. The section on Abruzzo links to Abruzzo Nature and to Local Food and Drink and Accomodation in Abruzzo.
The section on agents lists all of the Estate Agents and property companies that operate in Abruzzo.SEARCH FOR PROPERTIES This new section covers old traditional brick floors and how to lay and care for them.

Your Abruzzo Home?

Abruzzo, like all of Italy is a land of contrast.Deserted historic villages high in the mountains seem to meld into the mountains and many of them have their origins in Roman times .The houses are rooved with old 'coppi' or 'roman' tiles making them blend so harmoniously into the countryside around them and creating a 'sea' of terracotta .

Nearer the coast Pescara is a busy, bustling town with a choice of excellent bars, shops and restaurants and many cultural events which take place throughout the year including a Jazz and Literature Festival.

The town is visited by Italians on their summer holidays but just a few miles inland the the Majella mountains offer escape from the crowds and are peaceful and still even in August. The only sounds come from sheep bells and the cry of Buzzards overhead.

The idea for this website came through my membership of the Italy Forum set up by the Italy Magazine. Many members of the forum owned a home in Abruzzo and it seemed that we all had our own experiences and advice to share. Thanks all.
