The rocky mountains of the Majella, Gran Sasso and Velino, vast forests, gentle rolling hills and the unspoilt sandy beaches of the Adriatic coast are the natural attractions of Abruzzo
The construction of the autostradas in the 1960's from Rome, Bologna and Bari, and more recently the tunnel under the Gran Sasso bought more visitors into this region.
In Abruzzo you'll find the spectacular mountains of the Apennines, the Gran Sasso, Majella and Velino-Sirente, gorges, woods and valleys, national and regional parks, vast expanses of sandy beaches, and important early Roman settlements. In some of Abruzzo's parks if you are very lucky you may see wolves, bears, chamois, and eagles.
The Abruzzi a History
The existence of three provinces under the name of Abruzzo also explains why the region has always be known in the plural, Pescara, the fourth and last province, was added in 1927. After the fall of the Hohenstaufen dynasty in the 13th century, Abruzzi and Molise in turn came under the control of the Anjou, the Aragonese, the Spanish Hapsburgs, and finally, in the 18th century, became part of the Bourbon kingdom of Naples, under whose rule the region was divided into Abruzzo Ulteriore I, Abruzzo Ulteriore II, Abruzzo Citra, and Molise.
By the early 19th century small groups were taking part in revolutionary activities, and in 1860 the region became part of United Italy. In 1948 after WW2 Abruzzi was joined with Molise, to the South, to form the region of Abruzzi and Molise; but in 1963 the two regions were separated again.
Abruzzo Traditions
| The annual 'sheep migration' known as 'Transumanza' in Roman times occured at the end of September. The sheep were taken along tracks from The Abruzzo mountains to Apulia. The departure of the shepherds was met with hostility by their wives who were left alone all winter and sung traditional ditties featuring such lines as"you love your sheep more than me" and "go you may not come back".
Once on the track the menfolk were able to partake of the services provided by special taverns, sancturies and brothels!

During WW2 Abruzzo was the scene of many battles. My own uncle was in Orsogna where he remembers the great kindness shown to him by the local farmers who fed and sheltered him.
| The Abruzzo Film Commission is a project started by Gabriele Lucci in 1999. The Abruzzo Film Commission was established in December 2001 by the local town Councilman for the Arts.
This was achieved in conjuntion with film, television and theatre organisations: the International Academy of Image Arts and Sciences, the L'Aquila Film Institute La Lanterna Magica", the Abruzzo State Theatre, the Associazione Teatrale Abruzzese Molisana and the L'Uovo Innovative Theatre Organisation
