It has been a very difficult summer for people living in Abruzzo. With no rain falling since June August was dry and very hot.
When very high winds got up it was inevitable that small fires would soon spread and this is exact what happened.A particularly badly effected are was from Bussi to Scarfa along the A24 autostada. The area around Pietranico had also been very badly burnt.By September the temps were much cooler and rain had fallen in the mountains. Some areas that had been burnt were even sprouting new green growths of bracken. However olive trees that were hundreds of years old will not recover.
It was suspected that some fires had been started deliberately in order to clear land for building. In Italy developers can build on land 10 years after a fire.It has been known for this period to be considerably shortened in some cases!!!

The hunting season has begun.I found this out on Sunday when I was slowly filling in some holes in our wall.I turned around to see a man with a gun slung across his shoulder! I did explain to him that I didn't want any shooting around the house and he showed me that the gun wasn't loaded.
Fortunately our local hunters seem more than happy to spend all sunday creeping about in the bushes tracking their prey. Not a shot was fired all day!
I was offered some wild boar which I declined wonder where they get it from as it seems highly unlikely they ever shoot one themselves!
