Bio Edilizia

Its not easy being green and its not easy tracking down environmentally friendly building and decorating supplies in Italy! It's not that they don't exsist they do.In fact the whole area of eco-building in Italy seems to be really taking off and many products are now entirley lime based.

The problem is that before you can look for something you need a name in Italian! A good tip for buying tools is to take a catalogue from the UK for instance Screwfix into shops/builders merchants.

The following companies have lots of information on Italian bioedilizia products and some have English versions of their web sites.

To make a cheap mortar mix up hyrdated lime with water, this forms lime putty which will last for years if you store it under a layer of water.Lime putty is mixed with sand 1:3 to make lime mortar a traditional building material.Tip powdered lime into a big plastic bin and slowly add water making sure that the powder is all incorporated well add more what until the mix is like yogurt then leave. There should be a small amount of water that forms above the putty mix ;if not add some yourself.Cover with lid and leave for 6 months or more.

Limewash can be made by diluting the mixture with water and colouring it with earth pigments. These can be bought from Castorama and other builders merchants.

Main colours are:Yellow Ochre,Burnt Sienna, Brown Ochre and Burnt Umber. There are also some blue/green pigments but it is debatable how well they mix with lime.

Earth pigments can also be added to water based emulsion paints for a subtle tone.
